ClickFrenzy 2012 failure to launch

November 23, 2012 by Jade Cadelina

ClickFrenzy pre-launch facts

ClickFrenzy the facts - Participating retailers include Saba, Sportscraft, Dan Murphy's, Kogan, The Iconic, StyleTread and Booktopia. Advertisement ''The whole aim is to stimulate activity in the online retail space for the benefit of all Australian retailers whether they are online or multichannel,'' he said. ''We want to establish this as an annual event before Cyber Monday really takes hold here and give Australian retailers a much needed boost ahead of Christmas.''

Post launch failure

The ClickFrenzy.com.au launch was to be “the sale that stopped the nation”. Instead of displaying Australia’s first national online-only mega-sale, the website suffered a total meltdown. There was no redirect to a fail-over website to tell visitors that the site was not available.

Instead, for 2 hours a short message informing visitors “http 408/409 server busy, The website is too busy to show the page”. There was so much hype and marketing before the launch but they where were not prepared for the influx of visitors.

You can’t just have a nicely designed web front-end and hoped that the web servers will cope during the site launch. You also have to think of your back-end systems and how everything is going to perform when there is a stampede of potential customers.

Another example of poor web infrastructure planning. For something simple like a friendly 404 page to guide a visitor to a sitemap. They forgot to add a friendly 404 page or a redirect. Nobody wants to see your websites “404 Error page!!“.

WordPress 3.0.2

December 1, 2010 by Jade Cadelina

WordPress 3.0.2 is available and is a mandatory security update for all previous WordPress versions. Haiku has become traditional:

Fixed on day zero
One-click update makes you safe
This used to be hard

This maintenance release fixes a moderate security issue that could allow a malicious Author-level user to gain further access to the site, addresses a handful of bugs, and provides some additional security enhancements. Big thanks to Vladimir Kolesnikov for detailed and responsible disclosure of the security issue!

Download 3.0.2 or update automatically from the Dashboard > Updates menu in your site’s admin area. You should update immediately even if you do not have untrusted users.
